1.  Dangerous deficiencies exist in detecting certain hazardous and prohibited substances being smuggled through airports and mass transit hubs worldwide.

2.  Rapid in-field identification of explosives, chemical, and biological warfare agents, toxic chemicals, and narcotics is increasingly critical for first responders, law enforcement and military personnel, and security check-point agents.

3.  Explosives, narcotics and other prohibited or potentially dangerous substances within sealed bottles, plastic bags and other common carry-on containers can easily pass undetected through today's sniff or vapour detection technologies.

4.  Suspicious powders and unknown semi-solids within personal carry-on containers such as make-up kits cannot be identified on-site without deploying specialized haz-mat personnel.

5.  Security personnel endanger themselves and innocent bystanders by having to open and sub-sample unknown containers in public
